Thanks guys. Yeah I bought it from Jason. The car needed quite a bit of work and is still a work in progress.
Since i bought it, I have done:
New plugs (these ignition systems HATE platinum plugs!)
High pressure power steering line
Replaced all vacuum lines in the engine bay
New battery
New battery cables and charge cable
New radiator
New cooling fans
New thermostat
And a couple cooling system flushes, thank you Bob for use of the hose haha
Still needs more work, but she's coming along nicely. I'm up to 221,000 miles now and she's running strong! |

Next should be the old school GTP 3.4 DOHC.
Good call! I would really like to own a 91-93 GTP with the LQ1 and 5-speed. I used to have an 89 GP SE with the 2.8 and Getrag 282 5-speed and loved it.. I shouldn't have gotten rid of it. Oh well.. I need to keep my eyes peeled for a GTP |

Yes, we all thought it had a blown headgasket or warped/cracked head. When I came over and checked the car out, I brought my compression tester with and got 180 PSI on 5 cylinders... and the #1 cylinder was sitting at 80 PSI.
I bought it anyway for $200 thinking I would have to throw in a new engine at some point. I brought it home and changed out the fluids and sparkplugs and it seemed to run fairly decent, so I kept driving it. I checked the compression on the #1 cylinder a couple weeks back, and it is up to 180 PSI now... and yes I triple checked that cylinder, I was pretty shocked. I thought for sure the head was bad, but maybe it was a collapsed lifter that finally freed itself.
The cooling system was very neglected on this car. I filled it with water when I bought it and drove around like this for a little while, and the water just turned to sludge. I had to buy some Prestone cooling system cleaner to get that crap out and flush the system forward and backward a few times.
Jason always had the problem of the upper radiator hose popping off on this car... When I flushed the cooling system, I found that the spigot where the upper radiator hose attaches to the radiator looked really short with no lip on it so the hose doesn't slide off... and the end was jagged! It looks like someone had cut the radiator with a hacksaw! And my drain c*ck on the radiator was leaking, so I went and pulled a nice radiator from another car, cleaned it up and put it in.
I also put in a new 195* thermostat, since the Memcal on this car wasn't tuned to run with the 180* t-stat Jason had in it. I really didn't like how cool it was running on the highway ~140* and it was probably killing the mileage. It runs much better now, and at the normal factory operating temp.
Another issue this car had was the cooling fans didn't work. After testing everything with my meter, I found I had a bad 30A fuse in the passenger side fusebox. After I replaced the fuse, I found the Primary cooling fan motor's bearings were completely shot (lots of shaft play= wobbly fan). So I replaced the motor on that with one from another GP with 68k on it in the JY.
Aaaand finally... I have fixed all the car's cooling system issues! I still have quite a bit of work on other parts of the car to do though.. It needs brakes and I need to change the transmission fluid and filter on it... so its a work in progress! |
